Family get-togethers are great – it’s a time to surround yourself with your nearest and dearest , enjoy some good food and conversation. What could possibly go wrong? Short answer: PLENTY, you’ve likely got deep-rooted personality clashes, in-laws and allergies to provide an obstacle course worthy of the Crystal Maze! But don’t worry, we @ Woggle have you covered to make sure you organise (and get the credit for) a family event to be talked about for generations!
- Whittle Down The Guestlist
Families are fraught with politics (betcha didn’t know that!) and deciding who to leave in and who to tactfully exclude is a minefield. Thankfully, a lot of very brave people have already done the legwork for this and there are plenty of excellent guidelines to help you decide. This article over at Easy Weddings but very relevant to any family do is a must: https://www.easyweddings.com.au/articles/10-ways-to-cut-down-your-guest-list-without-the-grief/
2. The Invites
Definitely moving on to the fun part – once the guest list is decided, then you’re good to go! Save money AND the planet by sending out e-invitations. Canva www.canva.com has free templates that you can use to design professional quality invitations for any occasion in minutes . Get creative and ask guests to list their favourite party music or dietary requirements – with Woggle you can keep real-time track of RSVP’s to keep an eye on numbers, too!
3. Strategic Seating
You’re still not out of the woods – make sure to avoid any pitfalls with feuding relations by organising your seating to keep potential trouble makers far apart. Got a shrinking violet cousin? Get him or her out of their shell by seating them next to a chatty guest – they’ll be glad to have the spotlight off them and the Chatty Cathy (or Ciaran) will love the opportunity to take someone under their wing.
4. Meals For All
Remember earlier when we said to ask guests about dietary requirements? Now is your time to shine! You’ll have had time to rustle up vegetarian and gluten-free grub so no awkward moments as even the fussiest eaters will have something to enjoy!
5. Know When To Fold ‘Em
If it’s the end of the night and revellers still aren’t getting the hint, then job well done! But seriously, if you feel that it’s time to wrap up, artfully start to clear away the table of food, drinks and candles – this will get you a few volunteer helpers and send a subtle message that it’s time to call it a night.
6. Follow Up
It’s an almost forgotten custom, but sending out a quick “Thank you” to all who attended is a really nice touch the next day. Again, a simple email with some photos takes minutes but is a great way to provide memories that will last
7. Now It’s YOUR Turn
You’re a tough act to follow, but you’ll be a firm favourite on everyone’s list!
